LEGO Turntable

A DJ turntable in LEGO, dressed like a record sleeve. On Side A you build it in eleven tracks, 38 pieces in four layers. On Side B it plays: you start the motor, drop the needle, ride the pitch and scratch by holding the record. The bonus track opens it into a service-manual exploded view. A switch on the stage swaps the LEGO for real parts in aluminum, rubber and vinyl, in the same scene.

What it explores

  • An eleven-step build, with every piece identified by its BrickLink number and a parts list linking to each one. The model was designed stud by stud and hasn't been built with real bricks yet.
  • Sound synthesized in the browser, with the playback rate tied to the platter's rotation. Start, stop, 45 rpm, pitch and scratch shift key and tempo together, like on vinyl.
  • The LEGO↔real parts switch changes the shape and material of the same four layers on the fly, in PBR, with brushed aluminum, felt, rubber and grooved, clear-coated vinyl.
  • An exploded view in isometric camera. The layers lift with numbered callouts, like in a service manual, and a slider moves between assembled and exploded.
